3rd Dimension Industrial 3D Printing

Indianapolis, Indiana

3rd Dimension Industrial 3D Printing was an industry-leading Direct Metal Printing provider in North America that was recently acquired by Addman Engineering. With the core of their engineering team’s experience centered around racing, they understand that time and precision are of the utmost importance for your jobs. Their highly-skilled team of engineers has the expertise to take clients from prototyping to manufacturing. 3rd Dimension produces prototypes and end-use parts with highly complex geometries that may not be a good fit for traditional machining.

Capabilities include:  Direct Metal Printing via 3D Systems DMP ProX320 (1), ProX 300 (1), and ProX200 (2) · Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) · Haas VF2 with simultaneous 5 axis machining · Laser Scanning-Creaform EXAscan

Situation

Dimension is a growing company with a strong client base in the aerospace industry.  Company and industry both saw a competitive and operational advantage to obtaining our AS9100 and ISO9001 certifications.  3rd Dimension’s quality management systems were an ad-hoc collection of Excel sheets and not really a system at all, as they had evolved over time from an R&D company into a manufacturing company.  3rd Dimension saw the change as a necessary improvement to help open new doors, continue working with current customers, and to better organize and control internal workflows and tracking.

Solution

Purdue MEP provided consulting to help set up new quality management systems for 3rd Dimension, which included a deep dive into the operations and workflows in order to create and set up workflow processes and documentation specifically tailored to 3rd Dimension’s core business.

Results

3rd Dimension was able to pass the AS9100 and ISO9001 audits on the first attempt with no findings, which opened up significant opportunities for the company. As one of the first in the industry to go down such a path, it has had a significant impact on the number and size of projects they are now working on.

“Purdue MEP provided consulting services for implementation of AS9100 and ISO9001 quality management systems at 3rd Dimension Industrial 3D Printing.  With the complexity of the systems and our business, we really needed a consultant that could tailor our system to an emerging technology, and that is exactly what we received.  We passed our audit with no findings and a very impressed auditor.  I can’t imagine going through this process without Purdue MEP and the consultant’s expertise.”

Bob Markley, Founder of 3rd Dimension LLC and Executive Vice President of Addman Engineering
